Selected Supreme Court Cases

Listed below are a selection of the Supreme Court cases that we will be discussing throughout the course.  Some of these are the full opinions, so they are quite long (i.e. we may only read portions of some of them).  The "Landmark Cases" provide review resources through an organization called Street Law, Inc.

Recent Important Cases

KING ET AL. v. BURWELL, SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, ET AL.

This case challenged whether or not key federal tax credits of the Affordable Healthcare Act ("Obamacare") were extended to citizens that lived in states without a "state exchange" (a key phrase mentioned in the legislation). Without these tax credits, concern was that people in states without the state exchange would lose their federally provided healthcare. DECIDED 6/25/2015

OBERGEFELL ET AL. v. HODGES, DIRECTOR, OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, ET AL.

This case challenged the Constitutionality of defining marriage as strictly between a man and a woman. DECIDED 6/26/2015
