Eleanor Dougherty (2012)

This book gives a nice overview of how to craft assignments (with great examples) in order to help students meet both the content standards of your classroom, but also the current Common Core Standards. Dougherty lays out a structure for the Seven Steps of Crafting Assignments, and then delves into how each can be accomplished.

  • Step 1: Identify content, focus standards, and skills
  • Step 2: Determine a product
  • Step 3: Identify demands and qualities
  • Step 4: Write a prompt
  • Step 5: Write a rubric
  • Step 6: Do your assignment
  • Step 7: Make an instructional plan

The next part of the book discusses the need for the proper environment for the assignments, a variety of anchor assignments/assessments/instruction, and the importance of sequencing and revision. She then proceeds to explain the benefits of data-gathering to both understanding how much the students know, but also to give you a sense of how effective the instruction was over the course of the day/assignment/unit/course.

For those looking for a PLT book, I would highly recommend this one, as it gives exceptional reflection points at the end of sections, and LOTS of examples.
